Sara Simeoni
About the artist
Sara Simeoni is an Italian dancer, choreographer, performer and video artist based in Germany. For many years she was a member of the Carolyn Carlson Company, performing internationally and collaborating with one of the most influential figures in contemporary dance. She graduated from the National Academy of Dance in Rome and continued her studies at the Accademia Isola Danza in Venice under the direction of Carolyn Carlson. In recent years, her artistic practice has increasingly focused on performance art, interdisciplinary projects and site-specific works.
Working at the intersection of movement, performance, film and visual arts, Simeoni explores themes of presence, memory, transformation and the relationship between body and space. Her works invite audiences into immersive experiences where physical action, visual imagery and poetic reflection merge into a single performative language.
Shadow Zone
Shadow Zone is a performance that investigates and creatively explores limitations in relation to space, the body, and the choice to work at a plane where full verticality is never achieved, favouring instead a physical position at a medium-low level, remaining as close to the ground as possible. How does the body adapt within an uncomfortable, unfamiliar limited space? What emerges when my curiosity to explore what lies beyond collide or interact with such a space? Can a limitation become the impetus to go beyond what I already know and discover new possibilities of being and becoming? The research in this work is a tension to inhabit a space of limitations and how, thanks to imposed restrictions, the “Shadow Zone” becomes the junction between space and body, between perception and action, shifting into a playground where fragility is transformed into a poetic act of resilience. The seed of this work is the result of improvisations that emerged during the collaboration with Bettina Helmrich for her performance “re-do do_do different” in October 2025.
